DataViz - Data Visualization

Turn SQL into saved reports. Write a query against the BodaPro database, choose how to show it — a table, a chart or a document — and keep it in a category so you can reopen it with one click.

Everything is stored locally in BodaPro's own database. No remote service is involved.

Reports and categories

  • Categories group reports into folders in the DataViz sidebar. Create, rename and delete them from the toolbar or a right-click menu.
  • Search the sidebar by report name.
  • Right-click a report to view, edit or delete it.

Deleting a category also deletes the reports inside it.

Report types

  • Table — a sortable, filterable grid. Rows load a page at a time, and sorting and filtering run in the database, so large result sets stay fast. Export the result to CSV.
  • Charts: bar, line, pie and scatter — rendered with Plotly, with one or more series mapped to your query's columns. Switch between the chart and its underlying data.
  • MDX — a Markdown document (headings, lists, tables, code) written straight into the report. Export it to PDF.

Building a report

The report editor has four tabs:

  • Query — a SQL editor with syntax highlighting. Test Query runs it and previews the first rows; chart reports preview the chart too.
  • Options — the report type, and for charts, which columns feed each series.
  • Actions — per-row buttons for table reports (below).
  • Info — name, category and notes. Notes show from the report's info button.

Row actions

Add up to four buttons to every row of a table report to drill down or act on that row. Each action is a script, and its results open in a grid:

  • SQL — insert the row's values with {{COLUMN_NAME}}.
  • JavaScript — read row.COLUMN_NAME and query with await action.dbQuery(sql); return the rows to show.
  • Python — read row['COLUMN_NAME'], query with report_action.db_query(sql) and return results with report_action.save_result(rows).

Works with BIP and other extensions

  • BIP — ask in plain language to create a category, write or update a report, run it and summarise the rows, or open a report or the editor for you. Creating categories and creating, changing, running or deleting reports ask for your approval first.
  • Other extensions can publish their results as DataViz reports and keep them updated.

Good to know

  • Report queries run against the whole BodaPro database, not a sandbox — a query can read any table the app holds, and a data-changing statement will change data. Keep report queries to SELECT.
  • Python actions and PDF export use the desktop app.

How to install

Open BodaPro, go to Extensions, search for DataViz - Data Visualization and choose Install.
